plant show, Los Angeles... this was identified as A nobilis, a synonym, perhaps. This plant was about 18" in diameter- huge!

Two nobiles in this capture. These grow out in full sun in SD County and have pupped on the stem in a profusion of plant heads. They appear to be ready to flower.
