Desert Beardtongue, Canyon Penstemon (Penstemon pseudospectabilis) bloom buds. Note that the upper leaf bases are joined together around the stems and that the bloom buds appear from an almost circular indented "basin" in the leaves. Shown in mid-March.

Desert Beardtongue, Canyon Penstemon (Penstemon pseudospectabilis) very, very long bloomstalk with open and unopened blooms. New buds are still forming. This plant has grown amazingly fast and much larger than I had expected. The blooms are lighter than the ones from last year. Too rich soil and too much water? The other plant I have is 1/3 the size of this one. The bright colors in my photo did not upload accurately.
