Growing in filtered bright light, with an ocean breeze and lots of fertilizer, this is my all-time favorite and best performing houseplant.

Here is a plant happily growing in the ground in the Los Angeles arboretum. Note the chunks taken out of the leaves here and there (snail damage).

This one in the Los Angeles arboretum is in a greenhouse so no snail damage. But it's a good shot of the underside of the leaves in a happy, sporophyl producing plant. That brown is thousands of itty bitty sporophyls (and the material holding them). If you have perfect conditions (constant heat and humidity) you can grow thousands of ferns from those sporophyls. It's harder than it sounds, though.

This Bird's Nest fern is about 25 years old and is not bothered by snails at all. It is about 10 feet in diameter and grows in filtered shade in La Mesa, CA (a suburb of San Diego).
