Pomagranate anatomy. When the bloom first opens, the ovary is just a small bump on the back of the bloom. Once the bloom is pollinated, it drops off and the ovary swells, making the points of the bract that were behind the bloom move closer together until it looks like the "Jughead hat" shaped protrusions you see in the photo. Most of these fruits are not ripe yet.

My ornamental pomegranite tree has double carnation-like blooms measuring 4 inches in diameter. This one is not fully opened yet. It was supposed to be a dwarf and nonbearing, but it was mislabelled and is a medium sized tree and bears some fruit. Shown in April. (San Antonio, Texas)

A side view of a bloom and a developing bud on my ornamental medium sized pomegranite tree. It has no thorns and bears only a few fruit.Unfortunately, I have not been able to identify the cultivar. It was mislabelled as a dwarf. Shown in April. (San Antonio, Tx.)

Pomegranate, Granate Apple (Punica granatum) tree with blooms starting to open in April after heavy rain (causing limbs to hang down. Reds didn't upload true to the original photo.
