This plant dies back in the winter but emerges in the spring.

This is a sprouting rhizome of achimenes longiflora. After they die off, I dig the rhizomes, wait for them to sprout like this, then re-plant.

Achimenes at flowering time in mid-August in my Zone 8b/9a garden. A flower bud is visible on the largest plant to the left. These plants are dormant most of the year.
