We had success with a rooted transplant into her front yard. Low-and-behold, it thrived summer of -06 and grew this 18 to 20" spike with canary yellow blooms. The blooms gradually opened to the end of spike and lasted the entire summer.
Two weeks ago, I saw this article, by chance, and then realized we have rare mullien, Verbascum 'Snow Maiden'. What a find!

However, this plant stayed evergreen throught out the winter so I can say that it provided winter interest with it's large fuzzy leaves even without flowers..
The bees love it and I'm sure the butterflies would too if I saw any nectaring.
Mine is about 5' tall and is covered with cream colored flowers.
