--ssp. conspicua; dosen't cluster, small dark pink flowers.
--ssp. elegans; dosen't cluster, stem only 2-3 inches thick, flowers are rose red.
--ssp. san-angelensis; dosen't cluster most of the time, stems are 1.5-3 inches thick, flowers are carmine red to pink and 1 inch across.
--ssp. schmollii; has narrower stems and black or reddish-brown spines.
