I have had surprisingly good success with Lithocarpus edulis here in Salt Lake City, Utah (zone 7b). I had no intentions of this beautifu...Read Morel tree even surviving one summer here as it regularly gets to 110 F. But 9 years later it’s growing strong and has gained some serious height. I have it in a protected spot that receives full shade under a Quercus hypoleucoides, and it seems to really like the spot it’s in. I give it water every other day in the summer because it’s just so dang dry here in the desert Southwest, I think that has a lot to do with it doing good here. The winter temperatures here have never affected it whatsoever, even at 10 F it was completely green(including new growth) and growing strong. It even started flowering the passed two years and they are beyond gorgeous. I have been more than pleased with this beautiful broadleaf evergreen, and very surprised to see it thriving here in the desert so far away from its native environment. It also seems to be able to take alkaline soils pretty well too, I did amend the soils when I first planted it but haven’t since then besides throwing some leaves around it every year. If you live in zone 7b or above try this tree out!
