There are four subspecies which all have coarse wool and usually grow solitarily but stem with age:

The subspecies 'oaxacana' has blooms that range from carmine red to pink and 20-22 radial spines per areole.
The subspecies 'reppenhagenii' has carmine red flowers with lighter margins and 19-26 radial spines per areole.
The subspecies 'tegelbergiana' has purple-pink blooms and 18-24 radial spines per areole.
