This species belongs to the Dasanthera section of Penstemon and like those members, this one can take wetter climates and more acidic soi...Read Morel. However, what is unusual about this species is the fact that it is herbaceous; plant completely disappear in winter. The vast majority of penstemon are evergreen or at least semi-evergreen. I grew mine from seed in 1995 and each year it forms a rounded bush to about 18".
