There is some confusion as to its heritage with some early sources saying it is a seedling of Gilpin, a very similar variety. Calhoun says North Carolina Keeper closely resembles Bullet and may be identical to that old North Carolina variety. Fruit size is medium or smaller, conical, with yellow skin mostly covered with red and darker red striping. Flesh is yellow, crisp and juicy. Ripens late winter and is an excellent winter keeper.
