The American counterparts are now M. wendtii and M. porphyrea. the former is found in extreme SW Texas, the later in S Arizona and S New Mexico. Meanwhile, to the average wildlfower enthusiast, all three species look alike! They are small plants with minute maroon to green-maroon flowers. All three grow in open forests that seasonally can be very dry.
