The strap-like leaves are stiff, grey-green with distinctive white, encrusted edges. Lovely even when not flowering. When it does bloom, a stout stem arises up to 2.5ft with a large spray of white flowers, finely spotted with red. There are a number of named forms which vary in the amount of red spots on the blooms or the size of the rosettes. They hail from alpine areas throughout Europe.
