It is gr...Read Moreowing in the typical silty-clay loam soil of northern Illinois soil that is close to neutral pH. It is a good looking tree with handsome dark, leathery leaves with a soft whitish pubescence below. The other scientific name is Fraxinus tomentosa because of the pubescence on the leaves. It is not usually a common tree and is found in scattered locations. It grows in bottomlands in nature, but adapts to upland soils in landscapes. Native range is from western NY thru southern MI to southern IL to Louisiana and northwest FL.
