This hybridized cultivar was developed at the New Mexico State University in 1988 by Drs.Bosland, Iglesias, and Tanksley. Its cousins are the NuMex Sunrise and NuMex Sunset. They are used primarily as ornamental chiles. All three cultivars originated from a cross between 'Permagreen' and 'New Mexico 6-4'. They are similar in pungency to 'New Mexico 6-4'.
