Native to much of the Eastern US, so not alien here in Indiana, but slowly invasive by the seed. A surprisingly small root system. I took out a big one this afternoon with a mattock. Better to identify seedlings and remove them early.
If you cannot get the spines out any other way, soak the afflicted part in rather warm water for 20 minutes and try again.
