It is widespread in and native to the southeastern United States. It is found in wet or moist ditches, moist to dry pine flatwoods, pinelands, roadsides, or wet or moist to dry sites in full sun to partial or light shade, from coastal southeastern and eastern North Carolina south throughout Florida except the Keys, westward into Texas (zones 8a to 10b).

The flowers probably benefit wildlife by attracting pollinating insects.
