It was released onto the market in the 1960s, and soon became one of the world's most popular apples. 'Gala' was New Zealand's most important variety for a number of years.

The 'Royal Gala' apple was developed as a cross between the Golden Delicious and a Kids Orange Red in NZ in the 1930's also by James Kidd. 'Royal Gala' is a red mutation of the 'Gala' apple.

Royal Gala apples are harvested in late February and March and are available until September.

I planted this variety in Fall 2008 and have gotten good yield every year since then. Ripens in my area in late August. Slightly suscepti...Read Moreble to scab, but depends on number and length of infection periods. Tree is very vigorous.

I am in Zone 8b. This is the only apple I've had complete success with, so far.

Description: Excellent for fresh eating. A very pretty, medium size, conical to round fruit with yellow skin patterned with bright orange-red. Firm, juicy, fine textured, yellow white flesh. Sweet slightly tart flavor. Hangs well on tree.
Tree Characteristics: Compact growth habit, prolific bearer. Needs heavy thinning to maintain fruit size and prevent biennial bearing."
