It was released onto the market in the 1960s, and soon became one of the world's most popular apples. 'Gala' was New Zealand's most important variety for a number of years.
The 'Royal Gala' apple was developed as a cross between the Golden Delicious and a Kids Orange Red in NZ in the 1930's also by James Kidd. 'Royal Gala' is a red mutation of the 'Gala' apple.
Royal Gala apples are harvested in late February and March and are available until September.

Description: Excellent for fresh eating. A very pretty, medium size, conical to round fruit with yellow skin patterned with bright orange-red. Firm, juicy, fine textured, yellow white flesh. Sweet slightly tart flavor. Hangs well on tree.
Tree Characteristics: Compact growth habit, prolific bearer. Needs heavy thinning to maintain fruit size and prevent biennial bearing."
