I cut it back to less than 2' tall in the spring, after which it fills out fairly quickly with attractive foliage. I never intentionally water it, though surrounding plants do get watered occasionally. Blooms make dramatic indoor displays that last for weeks. New plants have started from cuttings and root divisions. Though many warn of reactions to the sap, I've not had any problems even handling it without gloves and my many, many critters haven't bothered with it. My cat likes to sleep under it on occasion.
It does lean heavily toward the sun in my yard, which makes it eventually look sloppy and shade awakening plants under it - that's the signal that it's time for it to be cut back.

Just planted this spring but growing well in fairly dry area of yard, here in Oklahoma.
