i have both the variegated and plain akebia and the variegated one is a SLOW grower. I've got it in a bit of a shady spot with a few hour...Read Mores of afternoon sun in the summer and it grows only about 6-12 inches per year,in contrast with the plain green version which is vigorous and grows several feet per year. However, i havent tried it in sun and am sure it would grow faster if it were.
The amount of variegation seems to be variable between plants but the plant i have is mostly white (about 20%green), the colour is pure white and not the dirty creamy type of yellow/ white like in some variegated plants. My plant is only about 2foot tall but the leaves are also smaller than the pain green version, perhaps about two thrids the size. The variegation also doesnt fade in the shade and still stays bright white.
Both this and the plain green version are evergreen in my location (uk zone 9, min temp about -4 to -8c).
Overall i think this is a good plant as it's pure white, highly variegated, evergreen and will grow in shade....theres not much else that fits that bill apart from ivies (which can cause a problem with their aerial roots where as the akebia is a twining climber). The only drawback is its quite slow growing.
