Propagate with softwood cuttings in spring (a little mild hormone) or by seeds. I have it in my yard in Hawaii at a cool, wet 4,000 ft. and also have it in a large container at my other home in Eureka Calif. where it has made it through many frosty nights with no problems as long as not waterlogged. Its habitat in Hawaii is rugged, fast draining lava fields but is very adaptable. I've never seen any insect damage on this plant.
Ulei grows from the coast to about 10'000 ft., on Hawai'i Island and Maui.
It is used in local crafts and medicine.
