It is native to Arizona, Colorado, Illinois (endangered), Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebras...Read Moreka, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Wisconsin and Wyoming. The colors of the "blooms' listed above are the colors of the bracts. The blooms are inconspicuous and range from cream to pale green to very pale yellow. It can be found on wooded hillsides, slopes and plains growing in dry, gravelly, rocky or sandy soils.
This plant is semiparasitic on other plants which makes it almost impossible to transplant. All paintbrushes are semiparasitic. The genus was named after Juan Domingo Castillejo, a Spanish botanist in 1781.
