The leaves are aromatic when crushed. Not picky about soil, but cold areas are not good for this plant. Upper 20's is the limit and you will get some damage. They are from very arid maritime climates in Sonora/Baja, but don't seem to mind Phoenix heat and dryness.
I give it a little extra water in summer to encourage faster growth. Grows faster than microphylla and fagaroides and the leaves are larger and does not have peeling bark.
