It is a massive palm from Madagascar that actually grows here in California (in protected, perfect very warm environments)... but is best in the tropics. It is very needy of moisture, and has been found to grow best here in dry So Cal by being misted all day long in the warm times of the year. Otherwise the foliage suffers terribly and it looks awful. In Hawaii it is nearly unsurpassed as a striking specimen palm (well, there are many other great specimen palms for Hawaii, though). Best to keep out of winds as the large, sail-like leaves will get shredded. Named after a local southern California palm grower and pioneer, Dr. Mardy Darian, who discovered and brought back many new species of palms from Madagascar for us.
