A known fact about the Meliaceae family is that most species have very small and sparse communities that cover large areas with very few individuals, and Guarea guidonia, on the other hand, form very dense populations.

It is a medium sized tree, reaching between 15-20m tall. It has long, composite leaves that keep growing as the tree grows and the need for light urges, with dark green, shiny leaflets, forming a dense and dark foliage. The flowers are small and white, in axilar spikes, with a slight scent that atracts bees. The fruits are hard, and they can be planted like seeds.

It needs fertile and moist organic soil, high temperatures, and frequent watering. It doesn't mind some shade, but prefers full sun.
