This is a tree with a conical shape, reaching up to 15 meters tall. The leaves are not very broad, leathery, shiny and dark green. The male cones are small, reunited in groups of 3-6. The female cones are round and fleshy structures bearing 1 ovule each, dark blue, that grow and atract birds.

It likes moderate temperatures, never too high. Constant moisture, organic soil and full sun are required. This species is a pioneer, being one of the first to show up on degradated areas, preparing the room for the definitive native vegetation, so it´s a good choice to recover those areas.
