I know only three major species of Miltonia in cultivation: Miltonia cuneata (with dozens of brown and white flowers and vigorous ...Read Moregrowth), M. clowesii (used for hybridizations) and this one. I have tried the first one in my early "orchidophile" days, and could not keep it alive for much long. M. spectabilis I only knew by pictures in books, until I saw this flower in the Botanical Garden.
This is a short plant, with flat and long pseudobulbs, bearing 2 pairs of light green, ribbon shaped leaves. The flowers are solitary, rarely more than one per inflorescence. They are big (bigger than M. cuneata), around 6-8cm across. The petals and sepals are white with a light pink accent. The labellum is flat (with 3 minor yellow callousities near the base), white, with pink stripes concentrated in the middle. The flower has a slight sweet scent.
It can be planted on fiber, in small pots. It likes light shade, high temperatures and regular watering. Can be cultivated as a house plant if you can keep the humidity high.
An easy to find piece of orchid collections (now I realize this.)
