Wetland birds and ducks eat the seed and Canada Geese and Trumpeter Swans can eat the foliage. It makes a good cover and food source for birds and some other wildlife. Some native plant nurseries as Prairie Nursery in central WI, North Creek Nursery in southeast PA, and Blue Moon in southern MN sell the seed and sometimes plants for naturalistic restorations and such. The plant grows during cool weather in spring and fall.
