An entry in The Hilliar Manual Of Trees & Shrubs, Butler & Tanner, Frome, 2002, on page 187 lists this as a small tree. Well, I don't think so. It also states that this selection came from a number of seed raised plants supplied in 1940 to the University of Washington, Seattle, by Mr K Wada of Yokohama, Japan. Variously regarded as a hybrid between M. kobus and M. salicifolia, or a form of M. salicifolia
