It is very common, growing in roadsides and ditches, and many other locations, often in tall grasses near large lots but will grow in poor soil. It look like a tall dandelion when blooming but to tell the different between it and the group - false dandelion - it have more leaves that grows up the flowering stalks - leaves that is lobed. When using a weedwhip or snapping the stems, it gives off large amount of water along with a milky juice. It is non - pricky compare with the other species, S. asper.
