They form clumps of soft, bright green, ferny, pinnate leaves from which emerge upright stems topped with heads of short, tubular, bell- or funnel-shaped flowers usually in white or shades of blue or pink. Completely dormant in winter, they develop quickly in spring and are in flower by early summer.
Cultivation: Most species are very frost hardy and easily cultivated in moist, well-drained soil in sun or part-shade. Propagate annuals from seed; perennials from seed or cuttings of young shoots or by division. Some species self-sow freely.
P delicatum - Skunkleaf Jacob's Ladder
This native of the Midwest and western USA has leaves less than 4" long made up of 5 to 11, 1/2-1" long leaflets. The flowers are also small, blue to violet and open in summer. It is an excellent rockery species.
