Large shrub, 8 to 10 feet at maturity, selected from a Louisiana provenance. Should be more heat tolerant because of its southern origin.
Flowers are mixed fertile and sterile, like the species. June flowering and 8 - 10 inch-long inflorescences, arching due to their weight, with sepals covering about 80% of the fertile flowers.
Prof. Dirr suggests that cultivar 'Angola Prison' is possibly the same.
