Lustrous dark green leaves with stout stems on a sturdy shrub that can grow from 3.5' to 5' tall. The corymbs are saucer shaped and sterile flowers arranged in a double ring, usually dark red, but can be pink red. Sepals are elongated and entire. A second show of flowers is displayed sporadically on side shoots and develop late. Dirr reports that this plant can be cold sensitive.
