It won't take over however as it has a rather open habit. It's also the only red basil (apart from Thai - with much less red), that does well here. In fact it has out-performed all other varieties in the hot day cool night arid climate I have. It has become very popular with my Gardeners' Market customers too. Probably not a pesto candidate, but is especially good for Asian dishes where basil is used.
