"anga" means "hanging" in English and "lampu" means "lamp". The name is therefore given for the fact that the flower is hanging like a "hanging lantern".
It is grown around the city (Paramaribo) as hedges which are neatly trimmed every week or so. These hedges are quite dense and need very little watering. The plant blooms all year, the more sun and heat it is exposed to, the more it blooms.
Only the "red/orange" bloom color is known in Suriname.
Propagation methods:
1. Cut off a piece and place into the ground to start a new plant
2. Most effective way: Cut off a piece, place in water until it has roots before planting.
The funny thing is that locally ALL other varieties of Tropical Hibiscus-plants are called "Matrozen-roos" (Dutch) which is translated in English "Sailor's Rose". However, I do not know why.
One of these varieties is also grown as a "topiari" (sorry if I misspelled this word, my native language is Dutch).
I have to try this out yet with the "anga lampu" and will keep you posted. Meanwhile, enjoy your gardening.
Thank you for given me the opportunity to add some information about this plant.
Regards
Rosetietje
