I haven't tried to grow this, but there are wild specimens that seem quite content with very wet feet in a beaver pond which is alternate...Read Morely dry and flooded. The wild form (which I think is the 'wooly rose mallow') has huge 8"-10" blooms, white with a blood-red throat. the foliage is rather coarse, the leaves quite large, and the shrub form a bit ungainly. but oh my, is it pretty in bloom! I've seen it listed as threatened or endangered on various lists.
