We grew pe...Read Moreas off the grocery shelf in poor, heavy soil and got compact, bushy 14" plants which kept producing when we kept them picked: good as young "snap" pods (when it's too hot for green beans) or at the green shell or dried stages. Tip: In heavy soil, "hill up" plants as they grow to support stems and provide drainage. If plant color changes from black-green to yellow-green, you may be watering too often. Take really hot weather better than most vegetables, but will also grow in quite cool weather, unlike some cowpeas.
