It can be traced at least as far back as the period 1727-1817 , when Nicholas Joseph de Jacquin, found this bean growing in the Indian Ocean on the island of Bourbon . But it appears to have come from South America originally, and a very similar lima bean has been found in pre-Columbian graves in Peru. a very attractive Bean and it grows on short 5-6 foot vines. It is extremely drought and heat resistant.
