It is a heritage cultivar, so patent is irrelevant, dating well two centuries.
I have heard it described as "baby pink." As a designer, I find the softness of color quite beautiful. It isn't the perfect soft pink that can be found with impatiens: It does nudge in that direction profoundly and rather profusely.
Not all cultivars bearing the name are the same cultivar. Centuries and tales will do that.
Pruned as a specimen is the best way to do it. And the condescending views of some as to irregularity should be ignored. It is long past heirloom status.
This is a "Southern" tree, emphasis on "tree" as airflow can be important, and it really shouldn't be pruned the way, well, pruning happens. In humid but cool climates, fungus is amoung us.
The form of it is easy to control, and properly done, well worth the effort. The full tree form puts blooms at second stage.
