In one year, I went from 3 large rhizomes to triple that amount. It is great if one has the space to spread them about and friends to share them with.
Here in Coastal South Carolina, they have grown really well for me in full sun and in part sun. The leaves do look better when supplied a good soaking during the day. Minimal watering during hot spells & no rain will result in some floppy leaves & brown edges.
I think a good spacing between multiples of this plant is about 24 to 36 inches (2-3 feet). I say space 24 inches if you don't mind the leaves touching and 36 inches if you want a little space between plants once they are at maximum size. I prefer the latter for 2 reasons: 1) If watering by hand, it is easier to water each individual plant without having to move leaves around. 2) When spaced 3 feet apart, the rain is able to reach the ground easier and the roots.
The leaves hold up pretty well to high gusts of wind and even consistent strong winds without shredding to pieces.
