I would advise everyone to buy it from a reliable source, like Schreiner's, who still carries this and small quantities of many older iris not listed in their catalog. I first bought a package of what was supposed to be "Sultan's Palace" from a now defunct big box store and had four different, older, weedy looking reds show up. I then bought it directly from Schreiner's and have been pleased ever since.

Rich, deep red/maroon (the beard is the same color) with golden hafts and a beautful color pattern when looking top down into the bloom.
This one has persisted despite neglect, planting it amongst weeds, etc. Makes a really nice addition to an iris garden.

Naturally it does do better with attention and although it is not among my favorite colors it adds a depth missing with some of the others--it's family!

Rich red blooms on stalks that stand up well to the wind & rain.
Not terribly fancy but a truly beautiful color. Jfrizzell's photo gives a good idea. Grows, blooms and multiplies well.
