I started with 3 plants back in the 70s ...Read Moreand am now down to just one (iris borers, the bane of my gardening existence!). A couple of years ago, I transplanted my remaining "Betty Simon" to the vegetable garden and have been letting her grow on there. The idea is that eventually I'll be able to divide her and have more plants. For some reason, the iris borers didn't discover the iris transplanted to the vegetables garden until this year, and I've been able to destroy them before they reach the rhizome. This is a sturdy, reliable plant -- unless you have borers.
