Camellia 'Anemoniflora' (described as Anemone flowered, and now known as Elegans form) was brought from China to England in 1806. In Chin...Read Morea it was known as 'Noble Pearl'.
It is described in the International Camellia Register as having "5-6 large outer petals, a central cushion of ligulate petaloids 7.5-8 cm across, turkey red, becoming very dark in some conditions, leaves dark green and glossy, habit is open, vigorous and spreading".
In 1823 a seed from 'Anemoneflora' was grown in England by Alfred Chandler which resulted in Camellia japonica 'Elegans' in 1831.
