"Bulbophyllum nocturnum is perhaps one of the most remarkable orchid species described from the orchid collection @hortusleiden. This plant was collected from a wood concession on the island New Britain in Papua New Guinea. This meant that it's natural habitat is now gone. It was a young plant when collected so no one ever saw the flowers. Once in cultivation at the Hortus it either made buds or had wilted flowers but never did someone see an open flowers, which made the orchid people in Leiden think it might be a night flowering orchid. They took it home and waited with a good glass of whiskey what would happen. And something did happen as later that night the flowers opened. For the first time people witnessed the open flowers of this plant new to science. It belongs to the Section Epicrianthes which some amazing species such as the B. xanthomelanon I showed earlier. The flowers mimic fungus to lure fungus gnats and even spread the aroma of blue veined cheese. They later described it as Bulbophyllum nocturnum."
