However, it does get leggy, and attempts to prune it down to encourage branching has not been successful. So now after 4 or 5 years the plant has many dead branches that I've just had to chop out, leaving a small section that still has top growth. Is this a short-lived plant? If it should be longer lived, what could be going wrong with this?

It does get yellowing of the leaves if overwatered other than that it is a tough plant. The hummingbirds seem to like it too.
