It is native to China (sparse forests or mixed forests in mountains - Gansu, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Yunnan). It hybridize easily with A. vilmoriniana (and maybe also A. altissima). Very fast growing tree. Creates numerous suckers. It is not invasive in central Europe. In zone 6b it survives well the winters (frost kills only tips of shoots)
