He was told about the Motiti Island yellow variant in the 1940s, and was given access to plant material from these trees by Maori Ngai Te Hapu with their blessing, and was gifted seedlings.
The yellow pohutukawa originated only on Motiti Island which is located off the Bay of Plenty coast of the North Island of New Zealand.
