Nieuwoudtville,Bulb Capital of the World.
Haemanthus barkerae flowering and in seed in the Municipal Reserve just outside Nieuwoudtville. It rained on the 29th of March 2018 and the two photographs of the bulbs in flower were taken on the 6th of April 2018. The three photographs of these bulbs in seed were taken almost a month after the appearance of the flowers.
This Haemanthus is a bulb and a member of the Amaryllidaceae family. Like with so many of the Amaryllidaceae that grow in the Cape Floral Kingdom (winter rainfall area) they come into flower shortly after early autumn rain. H. barkerae flowers at the same time that Brunsvigia bosmaniae comes into flower.
H. barkerae, considering the size of the flowers, has a very big seed. The seed will germinate but will have to receive further rain during the winter to enable it to successfully germinate and survive.
