Needles are extremely congested for the genus. It can be used as a container plant and is most often used as bonsai as it's natural form is already like that of a bonsai. It's small size may make it a bit hardier than the (sub) species, but is safest no further north than zone 6. As the plant is so congested there may be issues with heat and humidity in the US South East. Usually, needle thinning can allow more airflow to prevent baking, but this will likely stunt the plant further. If you do try it as a bonsai, nite that as with most temperate plants, it will need at least a month's Winter rest to do its best.
