Ron's special breeding interests included Standard Dwarf Bearded and Tall Bearded irises, Siberians and Cal-sibs, contributing much to the iris world by leaving behind a substantial and rich legacy of 188 registered varieties - including some yet to be introduced plus more potential registrations to be selected from his many recent seedlings.
Englishman, William Rickatson Dykes died in a motor accident in 1925, and at a meeting of the British Iris Society held on 16 June 1926, it was resolved to award a medal to the hybridizer of the outstanding iris variety of each year in memory of Mr. Dykes - thus the Dykes Medal was created.
